Keratosis Pilaris is completely harmless but sometimes it can be unsightly.  It occurs because as the skin renews itself, old skin cells in the hair follicles get stuck, forming a scaly plug.  Keratosis Pilaris can be worse in our dry Utah winters or other times of low humidity when the skin dries out.

If you are ready to clean up your discoloration there are a few things you can do.   The number one way to prevent further damage is to wear your sunblock.  Wear it daily; even on cloudy days.  And, reapply, reapply, reapply.   If you have children start teaching them now to wear it daily.  THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF SKIN CANCER AND WRINKLES IS THE SUN.  ……Now that you are wearing your sunblock, you can start treating the brown spots by using pigment lightening products.  Read the product labels and look for active ingredients such as  glycolic acid, kojic, licorice, mulberry, retinols, tretinoin, vitamin C, Vitamin A, and others.  Hydroquinone can give dramatic results.   To boost the progress of lightening the skin, try regular microdermabrasion and chemical peel treatments.  REMEMBER though…when using any of the above mentioned treatments or products, it is very important to use your sunblock because they can actually amplify the effects of the sun.
