What’s the difference between Basic Esthetics and Master Esthetics

Young Female getting facial therapy | Mandalyn Academy in American Fork, UT

Over the past few years, skincare has been an exploding trend in the beauty industry. With more and more people interested in skincare, the demand for estheticians is on the rise.

If you are interested in becoming a part of this booming industry, there are many options for you to choose from. At Mandalyn Academy, we offer a basic esthetics course and a master esthetics course. We’re here to help you learn the difference between the two to help you decide which option is best for you.

What is an esthetician?

Let’s start with the basics first: what is an esthetician? An esthetician is considered a skincare expert! They analyze the skin and give it the best treatment to improve its appearance, texture, and well-being.

The level of expertise and education you obtain is dependent on what you want to achieve in the skincare industry. That’s why we offer different options and education programs. Let’s dive into the difference between basic and master esthetics.

Basic esthetics

Basic esthetics is a course we offer that teaches all the fundaments of skincare – hence the name. We teach our students plenty of skills and knowledge to help them prepare for work after they graduate. The basic esthetics program is 600 hours with a flexible schedule. You can go to school full-time or part-time and we also offer night classes. Depending on the schedule you decide to take on, you can complete this program in as little as 4.5 to 7 months.

Here’s a list of things you’ll learn in this program:

  • Facial treatments
  • Hair removal methods
  • Spray tanning
  • Manicuring & Pedicuring
  • Eyebrow shaping & tinting
  • Makeup application
  • Professional development classes
  • And more!

You may be wondering where a basic esthetician works upon completing a program and passing the exam. They can most often be found in a spa or salon that specializes in skincare. If you would enjoy working in this type of setting, then enrolling in our basic esthetics program might be the right fit for you.

Master esthetics

A master esthetician is considered an advanced skin care professional. They are called master estheticians because they perform more complex procedures and treatments. The master esthetics program builds on the basic esthetics program, but with more standards and training. It’s a longer program requiring more hours, but we have a flexible schedule for this program as well. You can graduate in as little as 8.5 to 11 months depending on if you are full-time or part-time.

In this program, you will learn:

  • Advanced facial treatments
  • Advanced makeup application
  • Micro-needling
  • Eyelash extensions (certification)
  • Advanced manicures & pedicures
  • Body wraps & Treatments
  • Laser Hair Removal
  • Advanced Chemical Peels

There are a lot of places a master esthetician can work. They can work in the following fields:

  • Plastic surgeons
  • Dermatology
  • Laser Practitioners
  • Medical Spas
  • Specialist Clinics
  • And more

If you can see yourself enjoying these services and work environments, then we encourage you to take the master esthetics program. This could possibly lead to more career opportunities because you could do everything a basic esthetician does and more.

Deciding which program is right for you

First, you need to know what you want out of your career to know which program is best for you. It will depend on what sounds more exciting to you as well as what fits your lifestyle the best.

Basic and Master estheticians are both skincare specialists. The biggest difference is the skills and techniques required to learn.

Another way to get to know which program is right for you is to schedule a tour! With a tour, you can get to know the teachers/campus, ask questions, and we’ll be able to talk you through the different options with our programs!
